Charles E. Jones, jazz guitarist and composer extraordinaire. Charles has been compared to great artists such as Grant Green, George Benson and Pat Martino. Charles has spent the last two years carefully crafting his debut CD, The New Groove, on Very Juicy Records/interactive, planning to release his masterpiece summer 2001.
Charles has written many compositions for Kenny G’s percussionist, Tony Gable and Tony’s band 206. Charles is also a frequent performer on the Northwest jazz scene performing regularly at McGowan’s, Salty’s and plenty of high-profile corporate gigs to keep the flow going.
"I have been working steadily on my new CD The New Groove for some time now. I guess I am a perfectionist, but I owe it to my fans to make sure this CD is as cool on CD as I hear it in my head," explains Charles. The sound of Charles’ CD is smooth jazz-fusion with extremely melodic, memorable melodies and great technical skill with soul. "I love my Gibson 335 and 175 guitars, my Fender Strat and --- when I really want to get sensitive --- my Washburn nylon string guitar - what can you expect, I am a guitarist so I love great guitars!"
Charles is the youngest of three musical brothers. When they were kids, his oldest brother, Maurice Jones Jr. (now the President of Very Juicy), gave him his first professional guitar when he was 13 years old. Maurice, who is a professional bassist, and their middle brother, Sylvester, who is a drummer, toured Canada throughout the late 1970s with Frank Roberts joining the bill, with Tower of Power, the Drifters, Denise Williams, Melba Moore and many others. During this time, Charles refined his jazz, blues, and funk chops, and laid the groundwork for his solo career.
Charles continued to build bands and credibility in the recording world and became a sought-after studio musician for artists such as Dave Raynor, 206, Sam Smith, and numerous others. Charles continues to do well recording for corporate clients.
Now Charles continues to perform throughout the Northwest getting ready for his first national tour to support his CD. Charles’ composition The New Groove is included in the award-winning Rain City jazz compilation that came out in 1999 to benefit the Millionaires' Club. That same track was included on another CD for London’s premier jazz station, which has resulted in tremendous interest in a European tour.
"I am happiest when I am recording and performing. I am blessed to have a wonderful wife, three beautiful daughters, an awesome older brother who has been totally supportive of my music career, and friends cheering me on as I take the big leap to support this CD," says Charles with a big smile. With this much talent and support, Charles is sure to shine bright.
